How to Play the Color Palette Challenge

The Color Palette Challenge is a fast color-matching game that tests your eye for subtle differences. Match the target shade to one of six swatches and score as many points as you can in 60 seconds.

  1. Start the timer

Press Start challenge to reveal a random target color and six swatches.

  2. Find the exact shade

Compare the swatches carefully. Only one matches the target exactly.

  3. Score and continue

Each correct match earns a point and builds your streak. The next round starts automatically.

Can You Spot the Exact Match?

Several shades below look alike, but only one has exactly the same color value as the target. This is a static example, not a live round.

Target color #347A94
A
B
C
D
E
F
Answer: B. Its value is exactly #347A94. The others are close but different.

What Is a HEX Color Code?

A HEX code is a six-digit combination of numbers and letters that describes a color in digital design, such as #347A94. It encodes the red, green, and blue components of the color.

After you answer a round, the challenge reveals the target's HEX code. Use Copy HEX to save it for a design, website, or color reference.

Tips for Matching Colors More Accurately

  • Start with the hue: decide whether the color leans toward blue, green, red, or another part of the spectrum.
  • Then check brightness and saturation: two shades can share a hue but look lighter, darker, vivid, or muted.
  • Compare before you choose: similar swatches often differ just enough to be wrong.
  • Use the keyboard on desktop: press 1–6 or A–F to answer without moving the mouse.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Color Palette Challenge free to play?

Yes. It runs directly in your browser with no downloads or sign-up.

How does scoring work?

Each correct match earns one point and adds one to your streak. A wrong answer resets the streak, and the correct swatch is highlighted. Use Next round to continue.

Can I copy a color's HEX code?

Yes. Once you answer a round, the HEX code is revealed and Copy HEX becomes available. If your browser blocks clipboard access, a field appears so you can copy the code manually.

Does the game save my best score?

Yes, in your browser's local storage. Clearing your browser data or switching browsers resets it.

Is this a color vision test?

No. It is a casual practice game, not a calibrated or diagnostic test. Screen brightness and settings can also affect how colors appear.
